Gira – Gira continues the design concept of the surface-mounted switch from 1966 with the new System 70.
In September, Gira celebrates the 60th anniversary of the surface-mounted switch.
In 1966, the family-owned company from Radevormwald first presented this type of switch at the Hanover Trade Fair. Its significantly larger rocker was exceptional for the time – and quickly became a global standard. Gira has transformed this innovative design concept into a new, powerful design platform with System 70. Four modular switch ranges in five color variations with over 200 functions are available now.
In the early 1960s, light switches in Germany were predominantly round, small, and functionally designed. With the surface-mounted switch, Gira set a clear counterpoint in 1966: its generously sized rocker focused on intuitive operation, making the light switch, for the first time, a consciously designed element with a visible presence in the room. Even the early product range included switches, push buttons, sockets, and frame combinations. From the outset, the surface-mounted switch was more than just a single product – this new archetype combined everyday practicality, ease of use, and aesthetics in a new format.
“The surface-mounted switch exemplifies what has always distinguished Gira: integrating technical functions into people’s everyday lives in a way that is not only reliable but also intuitively operable and aesthetically precise,” says Gira Managing Director Christian Feltgen. “Exactly 60 years ago, this large control element was our contemporary answer to the demands of electrical installations at the time. System 70 continues this design concept without altering its core.”
From surface-mounted switch to System 70:
Over the past decades, Gira has further developed the surface-mounted switch in terms of both design and function. The distinctive square format has remained a key feature. The Gira System 70 transfers the characteristic 70 x 70 millimeter operating surface into a modular and networked system environment.
“Today, it’s no longer just about switching lights on and off,” says Christian Feltgen. “Equally important are comfort, security, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and the integration of networked functions. The Gira System 70 provides a versatile platform for this. In addition to classic applications, it allows for the implementation of smart home solutions – for example, with the Gira System 3000, Gira One, or within a KNX installation.”
Four switch ranges, one common system logic.
The Gira System 70 comprises the four switch ranges F100, F200, F200 flat, and F300. The four series differ in design and execution but follow the common principle of large-area operation. This creates design diversity within the overarching system logic:
- Gira F100 represents a proven design with a gentle form and distinctive corner radius. The interplay of flat surfaces and soft contours gives the range a striking appearance.
- Gira F200 impresses with its very clean lines and a discreet, continuous shadow gap. The minimalist design underscores the architectural sophistication of modern room concepts.
- With Gira F200 flat, Gira presents a particularly understated option: With a mounting height of just three millimeters and specially developed device boxes for cavity walls and masonry, this range is ideal for purist installations with high design standards.
- The Gira F300, with its particularly narrow frame, also creates an attractive contrast to the generous operating surface.
“Excellent product design proves itself not only in the first impression, but over many years,” adds Hans-Jörg Müller, Head of Product & Design at Gira. “System 70 is therefore about precision in detail, reliable quality ‘Made in Germany’ and a design that meets today’s requirements without losing its validity tomorrow.”

More information on System 70 by Gira Giersiepen GmbH & Co. KG: https://partner.gira.com/en/systeme/system-70.html + The System 70 is the seamless continuation of Gira’s minimalist design language into a new platform with large operating surfaces. Based on the Gira F100, this new, modular and forward-thinking range has four independent design lines: Gira F100, Gira F200, Gira F200 flat and Gira F300.
By the end of 2026, the Gira F100 will become the System 70, a new and powerful platform. With four design lines in five colours each, for flush-mounted or surface-mounted installation and in a flat variant. The modular, forward-thinking product range of the System 70 is at the cutting edge of both mechanical and electronic technology.
The four design lines, Gira F100, Gira F200, Gira F200 flat and Gira F300, in the new System 70 set new standards in terms of design, haptics and design freedom in building technology. With its large, planar surfaces and minimalist design language, the System 70 meets the most exacting aesthetic requirements and blends seamlessly into diverse architectural styles.

More information on KNX Global Association: https://www.knx.org + Whether you want to control lighting, shutters, security systems, energy management, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning systems, signaling and monitoring systems, interfaces to service and building control systems, remote control, audio and video control,… All these functions work via an uniform system. This is called the principle of interworking. This is home and building control made easy. This is KNX.
KNX is the international standard that makes your space truly smart. Whether you’re creating your dream home or designing commercial buildings, KNX connects everything – lighting, heating, security and more – through one reliable system that’s built to last and grow with you.
KNX works as a common language behind the scenes, allowing devices from different manufacturers to communicate reliably with each other. Instead of separate apps or closed systems, everything is coordinated through one open standard – making systems easier to expand and adapt as your needs change.
In May 1999 members of the following associations founded KNX Association cvba:
- EIBA ( European Installation Bus Association)
- EHSA (European Home Systems Association)
- BCI (BatiBUS Club International)
The Association is the owner of the Worldwide STANDARD for Home and Building Control: KNX and also the owner of the KNX trademark logo worldwide. KNX Association is a non-profit-oriented organisation governed by Belgian Law. Members are manufacturers developing devices for several applications for home and building control based on KNX like lighting control, shutter control, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, energy management, metering, monitoring, alarm/intrusion systems, household appliances, audio/video and lots more. Next to manufacturers also service providers (utilities, telecom, …) can become a member of the KNX Association.
Next to its members, KNX Association has concluded partnership agreements with more than 75.000 partners in more than 164 countries worldwide.
KNX is an Abbreviation for the Word Konnex.

EMR Additional Notes:
- Flush-Mounted & Surface-Mounted:
- Flush-mounted is a method of installing a device, fixture, or enclosure so that it is installed within a prepared recess, cavity, or opening in a wall, ceiling, or other surface, with its visible face, bezel, cover, or trim generally approximately level with the surrounding finished surface. This leaves the main body recessed, while the front portion remains visible, creating a smooth, “flush” finish. This mounting style is often used for space integration, reduced projection, and aesthetic purposes, particularly in finished interiors.
- In contrast, surface-mounted is a method where the device, fixture, or enclosure is mounted on or above the surface of a wall or ceiling. Its body therefore projects from the mounting surface rather than being recessed into it. It does not require a recess for the main body, although holes, anchors, brackets, mounting plates, or other preparation may still be required for mounting and cable entry.
- The choice between flush-mounted and surface-mounted devices or enclosures depends on the installation environment, construction, accessibility, wiring method, mechanical and environmental requirements, available installation depth, and aesthetic preference. Surface-mounted options are often simpler to install, access, and modify, and are common in industrial, utility, retrofit, or unfinished spaces, while flush-mounted options are often preferred for finished interiors where a low-profile, integrated appearance and reduced projection are desired.
