wienerberger – Acquisition in the Nordics: wienerberger strengthens position in water management
- wienerberger acquires NEWS Group – a leading provider of sustainable wastewater solutions in Sweden and the broader Nordic region
- Strengthening our position in a market fueled by rising demand for sustainable, decentralized wastewater solutions due to new regulatory requirements and the need to modernize aging infrastructure
Vienna – wienerberger, a leading international provider of innovative, ecological solutions for the entire building envelope – in the fields of new build and renovation, as well as infrastructure in water and energy management – announced the successful acquisition of the NEWS Group in Sweden. With a focus on Sweden and the broader Nordic region, NEWS Group is the leading provider of sustainable water management solutions for connecting individual homes to municipal sewage networks where traditional gravity solutions are ineffective.
Demand for these solutions is on the rise, especially due to new regulatory requirements for wastewater management in Sweden and many Nordic countries. Rural communities and remote vacation homes are increasingly required to comply with the same level of environmental standards as larger communities, including connections to public wastewater systems. In addition to the increasing connectivity rate, a significant share of existing wastewater infrastructure in Nordic countries will require renovation and replacement in the next years, providing sustainable growth opportunities for the group’s core brands SKT and FANN.
Heimo Scheuch, CEO of wienerberger, says: “The Nordic countries have become an increasingly valuable market for wienerberger due to their ambitious ESG agendas and stable business frameworks. Building on the successful acquisition of Slatek OY in Finland in 2024 and the formation of ULMO as part of our buy-and-build strategy in Norway, we now take another step in our value-accretive growth strategy. NEWS Group has built a strong reputation for its sustainable, high-end wastewater management systems. These solutions complement our existing portfolio and allow us to cover the full spectrum of wastewater needs. With this step, we enhance our exposure to this promising market, diversify our portfolio and invest in our contribution to a sustainable, healthy planet with clean water for future generations.”

EMR Additional Notes:
- Sewage:
- Sewage is the part of wastewater that is contaminated with feces or urine, but is often used to mean any wastewater.
- Sewage refers to the waste that is discharged, whereas sewerage/sewers are the structure that the discharge goes into.
- Sewerage is the infrastructure that conveys sewage or surface runoff (stormwater, meltwater, rainwater) using sewers. It encompasses components such as receiving drains, manholes, pumping stations, storm overflows, and screening chambers of the combined sewer or sanitary sewer.
- CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility):
- Framework or business model that helps a company be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public.
- The purpose of CSR is to give back to the community, take part in philanthropic causes, and provide positive social value. Businesses are increasingly turning to CSR to make a difference and build a positive brand around their company.
- CSR tends to target opinion formers – politicians, pressure groups, media. Sustainability targets here the whole value chain – from suppliers to operations to partners to end-consumers.
- ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance):
- Refers to the three key factors when measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment in a business or company. Most socially responsible investors check companies out using ESG criteria to screen investments.
- ESG metrics are not commonly part of mandatory financial reporting, though companies are increasingly making disclosures in their annual report or in a standalone sustainability report.
- There is not a standardized approach to the calculation or presentation of different ESG metrics.

- Criteria are of increasing interest to companies, their investors and other stakeholders. With growing concern about he ethical status of quoted companies, these standards are the central factors that measure the ethical impact and sustainability of investment in a company.
- Consequently, ESG analysis considers how companies serve society and how this impacts their current and future performance.
- CSR vs. ESG:
- CSR is a company’s framework of sustainability plans and responsible cultural influence, whereas ESG is the assessable outcome concerning a company’s overall sustainability performance.
- The major difference between them is that CSR is a business model used by individual companies, while ESG is a criteria that investors use to assess a company and determine if they are worth investing in.
